Most articles about the FE exam start from the assumption that you should take it.
This one doesn't.
The honest answer is that the FE is necessary for some engineers and close to irrelevant for others. The mistake is assuming every engineering graduate has to take it simply because it exists. Before you register, work through five questions. Most people never actually sit down and answer them.
1. When is the best time to take the FE exam?
Timing matters more than almost anything else here.
Senior year of college. This is the best window you will get. Calculus, differential equations, statics, dynamics, thermodynamics, circuits, fluid mechanics, engineering economics: depending on your discipline, you have seen most of that within the last few semesters. That doesn't make the exam easy. It does mean you aren't relearning it from scratch. First-time pass rates for candidates who test while still in school, or within a year of graduating, are meaningfully higher than for people who wait.
Recent graduate doing core engineering work. Still a strong window, though the clock has started. Statics and thermo fade faster than people expect once you aren't using them daily. If you work around licensed PEs, or in an industry where a PE could eventually matter, this is a good time to move. If you've already decided to go ahead, here is how to actually prepare.
Three to five years in. Now the question changes. It stops being about what you learned in college and becomes about what you want next.
Maybe nobody around you has a PE and your path doesn't seem to need one. Or maybe you're starting to notice that the project leads, the senior engineers, and the people signing off on engineering work all happen to be licensed.
That second one is worth paying attention to.
2. Do you see yourself staying in engineering?
This sounds obvious. Ask it anyway.
Do you actually want to be doing engineering work in ten years? If you're eyeing a move into software, into management without a technical licensure track, or out of the field entirely, the FE's value drops fast. Its whole payoff runs through the licensure pipeline inside engineering practice: passing the FE earns you Engineer in Training (EIT) status, and EIT status is what eventually lets you sit for the PE exam.
If you're not sure, that uncertainty is itself an argument for taking it now.
Passing the FE doesn't commit you to becoming a PE. It just keeps the option open, and the option gets more expensive to keep every year you wait. For a college senior, it's cheap. For someone ten years out who suddenly finds a PE standing between them and the next role, getting back into FE-level fundamentals is a much bigger project.
3. Do you need a PE license in your field?
This is the question that decides the rest.
The FE is the first step in the US licensure sequence: degree, FE exam (which earns EIT status), qualifying experience, then the PE exam, with specifics varying by state licensing board. If a PE is in your future at all, the FE is not optional. It's step one.
But whether a PE is worth having varies enormously by discipline.
Civil and structural engineering. Licensure here is close to a practical requirement rather than a nice-to-have. Public infrastructure work, anything requiring a stamped and sealed drawing, and most roles carrying legal responsibility for a design need a PE. A civil engineer can absolutely work without one early on, under licensed engineers. But as the responsibility grows, so does the need for the license. If that's your path, FE Civil prep is worth starting while the material is fresh.
Mechanical, electrical, and most private industry. In software, product development, a lot of manufacturing, and plenty of mechanical and electrical roles, you can build an entire career without ever needing a PE stamp. That doesn't make you less of an engineer.
So stop asking "do engineers need the FE?"
Ask instead: do engineers doing the job I eventually want need a PE?
That question you can actually answer, and you don't need to guess:
A ten-minute conversation with the right person beats hours of debating whether the FE is "worth it" in the abstract.
4. Is a PE required to advance, or just nice to have?
Once you start asking around, sort what you hear into four very different buckets:
Those sound similar in casual conversation and mean completely different things for your decision. If the answer keeps landing in the bottom two, the FE stops being a judgment call.
5. Is the FE exam required outside the United States?
Don't assume the rules travel.
The FE and PE are part of the US licensure system, and US PE licenses are issued by individual states and territories rather than by one national body. NCEES does administer exams through agreements in a number of places outside the US, including Canada, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, and Turkey.
But availability is not the same as requirement. The FE being offered in your country does not mean engineers there need it to stay employed.
Most countries run their own registration systems with their own exams and titles. Canada licenses provincially through bodies like PEO and APEGA. The UK has Chartered Engineer and Incorporated Engineer status through the Engineering Council. If you plan to practice entirely within one of those systems, that country's credential is the one your employer cares about.
The FE becomes genuinely relevant outside the US if you plan to work in the States at some point, you're targeting an employer that specifically recognizes NCEES credentials, or you're pursuing one of the mutual recognition agreements NCEES holds with certain overseas bodies.
If none of that describes you, an American licensing exam is probably the wrong thing to spend your months on.
So should you take it?
Strongly consider the FE if:
You have less reason to prioritize it if you're building a career in an area where PE licensure rarely comes up, and you're confident you won't be doing licensed engineering work.
And if you genuinely can't tell? Lean toward taking it while the material is still fresh. You aren't deciding your whole career today. You're keeping a door open at the cheapest price it will ever cost you.
Just don't take the FE because someone told you every engineer should. Take it because you looked at the career you actually want and the requirements that come with it.
Your career path should decide whether the FE is necessary, not the exam's reputation.
