    PE Civil Transportation Exam Prep

One-on-one prep for the NCEES PE Civil Transportation exam, with practice finding answers quickly in the electronic design standards.

The PE Civil Transportation exam asks you to apply traffic, geometric design, and safety standards to practical problems. Much of the work is choosing the right method, finding the right table or equation in a large document, and keeping a steady pace. STEM Tutor 360 offers one-on-one prep built around those tasks. It starts with a diagnostic, works backward from your exam date, and uses timed practice with the standards open on screen, the way you will use them on exam day.

Topics include capacity and level of service, horizontal and vertical alignment, cross sections, intersections and signal timing, traffic control, crash analysis, pavement, earthwork, drainage, and construction. Sessions explain the engineering behind each formula, such as the kinematics inside a sight distance equation. That way you can check a table value instead of only trusting it. We also practice the unit conversions these formulas depend on, such as mph to feet per second.

    What We Cover

Traffic flow, capacity, and level of service
Horizontal and vertical alignment, sight distance, and superelevation
Cross-section and roadside design, including clear zones and barriers
    Intersection design and signal timing
Traffic control devices and safety analysis
Pavement design, earthwork, and geotechnical basics
    Drainage and construction topics

    How we build your plan

    • A timed diagnostic samples traffic, geometry, safety, pavement, drainage, and construction.
    • Shared math comes first: unit conversion, kinematics, and curve geometry.
    • Each topic is worked with its standard open: capacity in the Highway Capacity Manual, geometry in the Green Book, signs and signals in the MUTCD.
    • Safety analysis uses the Highway Safety Manual, and roadside problems use the Roadside Design Guide.
    • The last stage is mixed timed sets at exam pace, then a full practice session in the electronic format.

    Working with the electronic standards

The PE Civil Reference Handbook and the exam's design standards are provided electronically. For Transportation these include the AASHTO Green Book, the Highway Capacity Manual, the MUTCD, the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide, and the Highway Safety Manual. That changes how you should practice.

    • Study from electronic copies, so searching and jumping between sections feel normal.
    • Learn how each document is organized: parts, chapters, tables, figures, and appendices.
    • Run lookup drills: read a question, name the document, find the table, and time yourself.
    • Check which editions NCEES currently lists for the exam, and study from those.
    • Check one table value by hand. On a level road at 55 mph, with the Green Book's assumed 2.5 s reaction time and 11.2 ft/s211.2\ \text{ft/s}^{2} deceleration, stopping sight distance is 1.47×55×2.5+1.075×55211.2=202+290=492 ft1.47 \times 55 \times 2.5 + 1.075 \times \dfrac{55^{2}}{11.2} = 202 + 290 = 492\ \text{ft} The table rounds that up to 495 ft.

    About the exam

The NCEES PE Civil exam is computer-based and comes in five separate exams: Construction, Geotechnical, Structural, Transportation, and Water Resources and Environmental. This page covers Transportation, which has 80 questions and about 8 hours of exam time inside a 9-hour appointment.

Check the current NCEES exam specification for the full list and question weights. STEM Tutor 360 is an independent tutor and is not affiliated with NCEES or the publishers of the standards.

    Who this is for

Civil engineers preparing for the NCEES PE Civil Transportation exam, including people who work in design but rarely touch traffic operations, or the reverse. Retakers are welcome. Bring your exam specification, your study materials, and a list of the topics that slow you down. We are strongest on the math, mechanics, and exam method behind these topics. If your gap is somewhere else, we will say so in the free consultation. Sessions are online nationwide, with in-person options around Richmond, Sugar Land, and Katy, TX.
