One-on-One OAR & ASTB-E Test Prep

The ASTB-E (Aviation Selection Test Battery, E revision) is what the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard use to select candidates for officer and aviation programs, including pilot and Naval Flight Officer slots. The OAR (Officer Aptitude Rating) is a subset of it, three subtests scored on a 20 to 80 scale, and it is what many non-aviation officer programs like OCS actually require. If the OAR is all you need, that is a shorter, more focused test to prepare for.

The OAR is three subtests: the Math Skills Test, the Reading Comprehension Test, and the Mechanical Comprehension Test. Two of those three are quantitative and mechanical, which is squarely an engineer's strength and the reason one-on-one tutoring moves an OAR score so much. The Math Skills Test covers algebra, arithmetic, and some geometry, often as word problems under time pressure. Mechanical Comprehension is applied physics: pulleys, gears, levers, fluids, and pressure. Reading Comprehension is a process you can drill. The full ASTB-E adds three pieces on top of the OAR. The Aviation and Nautical Information Test (ANIT) checks aviation and nautical knowledge, the Naval Aviation Trait Facet Inventory (NATFI) is a personality inventory, and the Performance Based Measures Battery (PBM) is a set of stick-and-throttle and multitasking tasks done with hardware at the test center. Combined with the OAR subtests, these produce the composite ratings that aviation programs weigh: the AQR (Aviation Qualification Rating), PFAR (Pilot Flight Aptitude Rating), and FOFAR (Flight Officer Aptitude Rating).

Tutoring here focuses on the reasoning subtests, Math Skills, Mechanical Comprehension, and Reading Comprehension, because that is where teaching changes a score. I will be straight about the rest. The ANIT is mostly aviation and nautical facts you memorize from a study guide, and the NATFI and PBM are not tutorable the same way, since one measures personality traits and the other measures psychomotor skill you build through the practice tools. If your target is the OAR, that is the whole test and exactly my wheelhouse. If you are going for the full ASTB-E, sessions can carry the reasoning subtests while you handle the ANIT on your own.
