    PE Mechanical Exam Prep

One-on-one prep for the NCEES PE Mechanical exam, including help choosing your exam, a plan around your work schedule, and handbook practice.

The NCEES PE Mechanical is three separate exams: HVAC and Refrigeration, Machine Design and Materials, and Thermal and Fluid Systems. Choosing one is the first decision, and it shapes your whole study plan. STEM Tutor 360 offers one-on-one prep for all three. Your tutor is a Georgia Tech mechanical engineer. Sessions are online on a shared whiteboard, in blocks of 1 to 2 hours, and fit around a full-time job. We start with a diagnostic, then plan backward from your exam date.

The exam is computer-based, and the NCEES PE Mechanical Reference Handbook is provided on screen, so we use the handbook from the first session. The goal is speed and judgment: knowing which equation applies, where it lives in the handbook, and when a problem deserves your time. We work from your own review manual and practice exams. If a narrow specialty needs another resource, we say so in the free consultation.

    What We Cover

HVAC and Refrigeration: psychrometrics, loads, refrigeration cycles, and air and water distribution
Machine Design and Materials: stress, fatigue, shafts, gears, bearings, fasteners, and welds
Thermal and Fluid Systems: power cycles, pumps, fans, piping, and heat exchangers
Shared fundamentals: thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and mechanics of materials
A diagnostic that helps you choose between the three exams
Reference Handbook practice on screen and pacing for 80 questions

The three exams and how to pick

You sit for one of the three, so start with the work you do and the courses you remember well. Then read each topic list in the current NCEES exam specification and rate yourself line by line.

    • HVAC and Refrigeration fits engineers who work on building systems, air handling, chillers, or refrigeration equipment.
    • Machine Design and Materials fits engineers who work on machinery, mechanisms, machine components, or materials selection.
    • Thermal and Fluid Systems fits engineers who work on power, process, piping, pumps, or energy equipment.
    • If two exams fit, we run a short diagnostic in each. The one where you already recognize more of the problems usually needs less study time.

    How we build your plan

    • A free consultation covers your exam choice, exam date, weekly hours, and what you have already studied.
    • A timed diagnostic from your exam's topic list shows where the real gaps are.
    • We write a week-by-week schedule, worked backward from your exam date.
    • Between sessions you work problem sets from your own review materials, with the handbook open on screen.
    • The last weeks are timed mixed sets, an error log of every miss, and a pacing plan for 80 questions.

    About the exam

The NCEES PE Mechanical exam is computer-based and offered year-round at Pearson VUE test centers. It comes as three separate exams. Each has 80 questions and about 8 hours of exam time, inside a 9-hour appointment that includes a tutorial and a scheduled break.

The NCEES PE Mechanical Reference Handbook is provided on screen during the exam. Topic lists, question weights, and application steps come from NCEES and your state licensing board, so check them there. STEM Tutor 360 is an independent tutoring service and is not affiliated with NCEES.
